Donna Bennett has been a delightful fixture in Carolyn Piguet’s life for as long as both women can remember. The relationship between the two started when Carolyn was the FFA teacher at Vinita and was starting the school’s catering program. That program has evolved to become Piguet’s Catering.
“She was wanting to use the kitchen,” Donna said of how the two met. Donna continues to work in the school system as the child nutrition manager. “I grabbed on to her apron strings and have hung on for the ride.”
If you’ve enjoyed Piguet Prime Time’s signature dinner rolls, you’ve had some of the delicious goodness that Donna has baked.
“I bake all the homemade rolls and the cinnamon rolls,” she said. “Sometimes people try us out just because we have homemade rolls. Most (restaurants) don’t have them anymore.
“I take pride in making them,” Donna continued. “They are made with love.”
Donna puts most of her work in at the restaurant in the afternoons after school lets out and on the weekends. While her children are grown, three of her grandchildren and her son live with her. Her schedule still allows her plenty of time with her family.
“I’m almost always off on Sundays,” she said.
The rolls are so popular that sometimes people order just rolls or they order extra rolls to take home.
“That’s the ultimate compliment,” Donna told us.
While her rolls are the star, the cinnamon rolls are not too far behind.
“I entered the cinnamon rolls in the Craig County Fair this year and won first place,” she said.
Donna got her start in baking when she took Home Economics while in school. As an adult she made the rolls for the school and also made some for Carolyn’s catering business as far back as the mid-1990s.
One of the many things she enjoys about working with Carolyn is Carolyn’s ability to “pull a recipe out of a hat. She’ll pull something out and ask if we can make it.”
Donna has no plans to retire from baking soon.
