Enjoying seasonal items at Piguet’s Primetime
One of the best things about serving mostly locally grown food at our restaurant and through our catering service is the ability to really emphasize seasonal food throughout our menu.
This time of year is especially fun because we start seeing some delicious berries that start coming in that are delicious in both desserts of many kinds and a few savory options. For example, we are just now starting to see the beginning of the strawberry season. Strawberries with feta and greens make an amazing salad that you can have an entree salad with meat or served as as side dinner salad.
But really, we love strawberries for our amazing desserts; everything from strawberry shortcake to strawberry pie to something simple as jam on a biscuit. We get our strawberries straight from Horton’s Produce, which is about 10 miles away at Bluejacket. The family-owned farm started in 1887 and has been feeding families for more than a century. We are proud to partner with them at our restaurant and farmer’s market.
You may notice that we have freezer jam available all year long. We love making freezer jam because it’s basically just strawberries with a little bit of sugar that gets frozen. It can be thawed throughout the year to make jams, sauces, and more.
Another fruit you will see soon from Horton’s is blueberries. This season is usually relatively short-lived it seems, but it produces amazing and diverse options from salads to breads and toppings for yogurt or ice cream. That season is usually around the end of May and the beginning of June. Just in time for Father’s Day and 4th of July celebrations!
Whether you’re enjoying a slice of dessert at our restaurant or ordering dessert for 100 through our catering service, we always recommend finding out what is available in seasonal fruits and other ingredients that can be made into a dessert (sweet potato pie this fall, anyone?). It can add a fresh, fantastic end to an equally delicious meal.
