Heritage Pork partnership years in the making

When we open our doors at Piguet’s Prime Time later this year we will have some of the best steaks you’ve ever tasted. But we will also have some of the most mouthwatering, amazing pork to tantalize your tastebuds. And it will be thanks to a new local farm in Vinita that will be offering Heritage Pork.

The farm is so new that as of right now, it doesn’t have a name. Paige Pitts and her husband, Adam, are just getting started with the farm and are excited about the new adventure. Paige family heritage pork

“I have always known that at some point in my life I wanted to live on a little land and raise food. My husband and I were living in Tulsa but talked about building a little house in the country one day. Having a baby sped up the timeline as my grandma offered to babysit our daughter when I went back to work, so moving back to my hometown was the logical choice,” Paige said. “We ended up buying a little house and land that we have loved developing it to our own little farm. After getting a start with raising chickens, we wanted to add a couple of feeder pigs to raise for our family.”

Paige said that one day, her mom had brought over some “Mangalitsa bacon she had ordered online from a regenerative farm in Oklahoma and it had so much flavor!”

The family was hooked and decided that was the kind of pig they wanted to raise.
“It was a game-changer for me. I had never heard of the breed but was determined that was the kind of pig we needed to raise,” Paige told us. “After researching the Mangalitsa and learning about its history and desirability, I knew we needed to be a part of raising and sustaining the breed.”

Paige explained that Heritage pigs are breeds that have been around since before the onset of industrial farming.

“Heritage pork often has exceptional flavor and marbling compared to modern breeds that are bred to live out their short lives in the conditions of industrial farming,” she said. “Starting a breeding program with our Mangalitsas will also allow us to offer something unique to our family, neighbors, community as a whole that could not be bought at the grocery store. While our initial focus is on the Mangalitsa, I am looking forward to adding in other heritage breeds to the farm in the future as well.” pig heritage pork

Choosing both the breeds and manner of raising their livestock is important to the whole family.
“The industrial food system focuses on fast-growing animals that are good for the bottom line, with little care about humane conditions for the animal or sustainability. One of the benefits of a heritage breed is that the animals can be raised on the complete opposite side of the spectrum of what we get with animals raised on a factory farm,” Paige explained. “I love that! The heritage breeds thrive in a traditional farm setting where they have fresh air, sunshine, and plenty of exercise. Raising animals that get to live their life the way nature intended is important to me when I think about animals I want to raise to feed our family and others.”

Paige is as excited as we are to partner together for some of the best pork you’ve ever had.
“I love the idea of local producers providing for a local restaurant and am looking forward to being a part of that,” she said.

She also had great things to say about our founder, Carolyn Piguet, who Paige has known since she herself was in 4-H. Carolyn was also her boss when Paige worked as a lifeguard, and she is good friends with Carolyn’s daughter, Kelli.
“There is no greater person to bring a farm to fork restaurant to our community than Carolyn. I am not only thrilled for her that she is making this dream a reality, but I am excited for our community as well,” Paige said.

We couldn’t have said it better!
